UK University Admissions: Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA)

Traditional Hong Kong families’ perception of UK universities outside the prestigious Oxbridge are supposedly “easier” without pre-interview exams and interview requirements. As a result, many believed that if their child had strong academics (top marks in IBs, A-levels, or the HKDSE), they could simply apply to other UK schools conveniently. Nevertheless, the reality is that more and more top UK universities are now requiring prospective students to undergo specialized admissions tests, previously reserved for elite institutions such the Oxbridge.
In particular, the Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA) is gaining traction among leading UK universities, including Imperial College London, the London School of Economics and Political Science, the University of Warwick, and the University of Durham. These institutions have recognized the value of the TMUA in identifying the most talented and capable candidates, ensuring that they attract the brightest minds to their programs. The TMUA, which was originally developed by UAT-UK, a joint venture between the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London, is a rigorous assessment that evaluates a student’s mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Below are courses which have announced requirements for TMUA for 2025 entry:

This development has significant implications for prospective students, who must now factor in the additional preparation and effort required to excel in these specialized admissions tests. It is no longer enough to rely on strong academic performance alone; students must also develop the specific skills and strategies needed to succeed in these assessments. TMUA Dates:
Candidates will need to register independently for the test at a Pearson VUE test centre in one of two test sittings:
- 16 October (Wednesday) or 17 October (Thursday) 2024 : Registration will open on the Pearson VUE website on 1 August (Thursday) and close on 16 September (Monday)
- 8 January (Wednesday) or 9 January (Thursday) 2024 : Registration will open on 24 October (Thursday) and close on 9 December (Monday)
Applicants to Imperial, Durham, LSE and Warwick will have a choice of the October or January test sitting. If candidates also intend to apply to Cambridge, they must sit the test in October.
The results will be automatically shared with participating universities that candidates intend to apply for to make the process as seamless as possible.
