Larry So

Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science SAT, ACT & SSAT

Larry’s teaching style focuses on interaction and building intuition. He believes that equations and formulas can be challenging to understand at first and may seem like meaningless symbols to many students. Instead of relying solely on reference materials, Larry encourages students to focus on understanding concepts and creating mental models of problems, which makes solving questions much easier.

Larry holds an M.Eng. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge, and a M.A. in Chemical and Biological Engineering from Princeton University.

Larry has several years of experience teaching IB students Mathematics and Physics, and has also served as a teaching assistant at the graduate level. One of his significant accomplishments is mentoring a junior undergraduate at Princeton, who went from having no prerequisite knowledge to becoming proficient in the lab within a few months. This mentoring relationship resulted in a published paper over the next year.

Larry has taught the following subjects:

  • Mathematics (IB, I/GCSE, A-Level & AP)
  • Physics (IB, I/GCSE, A-Level & AP)
  • Chemistry (IB & I/GCSE)
  • Computer Science (IB & I/GCSE)
  • Test Preparation (SSAT, ACT, SAT)

Larry is an avid runner and gym-goer. He believes that physically demanding activities not only condition the body but also prepare the mind for the day ahead. He finds that challenges that initially seemed insurmountable can be viewed in a different light after physical exertion.

Having been born and raised in Hong Kong, Larry understands the pressures faced during formative years, including the challenges of the IB program and applying to colleges globally. He has always been the person that people turn to for explanations when the teacher falls short, and he believes that his experiences have prepared him well for his teaching role.
