ACT Inc. has announced that it will change its essay grading scheme from a 1-36 scale back to a 1-12 scale starting this fall.

The scoring change comes in response to the criticism ACT has received since the essay went through a major overhaul in September 2015 in which they changed the structure of the essay and adjusted the grading to match the scaled score of other assessment sections of the test.

Since the change, students have sometimes received essay grades that were disproportionate from the other components of the essay. (In one case, student has received a score of 19 for writing, and was later re-scored to a 31. Source: Washington Post)

The scoring change will not affect the actual assessment of the ACT essay or the criteria of it.
