What is the SSAT?

The Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) is a standardized admissions examination used by many unaffiliated independent schools and boarding school throughout North America.  The test consists of four multiple-choice sections and an essay, with sections testing students’ reading skills, mathematics proficiency, and vocabulary.  It may be taken at three different levels and is offered to students in grades 3-11:

Elementary (for students currently in grades 3-4)

Middle (for students currently in grades 5-7)

>> Click to view: The Middle-Level SSATs At a Glance Guide

Upper (for students currently in grades 8-11)

Who is it for?

Students who plan to study at independent or private boarding schools in the US and Canada need to take the exam.  Admissions officers use scores as well as personal essays, school grades, and other criteria to determine which students are admitted and which are not.  The results are seen as a reliable indicator of how well students will handle the rigorous curricula characteristic of the most prestigious North American secondary schools.

When to take it?

The SSAT is offered 8 times a year – in October, November, December, January, February, March, April, and June. Check out the upcoming test dates on the SSAT official website. For details on Fees and Deadlines, please visit this page on the Official SSAT website. For more details on the exam, check out the‘s explanation of all the components on the exam.
